Will freezing and thawing damage concrete products?
Will freezing and thawing damage concrete products?
No. Frost damage is practically nonexistent! The space between the concrete pieces (paving stones, slabs, or retaining walls) allows them to move without cracking or splitting. The quality of the concrete we use also ensures increased frost resistance for each product. New for 2022: Our drycast products have seen their biggest improvement yet with Hydrapel. Factory-engineered for enhanced quality and precision, the products are made with an additive that makes them permeable and therefore more durable. Added directly to the mix of our drycast products, Hydrapel reduces the absorption rate and increases resistance to freezing and thawing, as well as weathering. Hydrapel protects against stains and enhances UV resistance for a vibrant, long-lasting color!
How to de-ice concrete in winter?
How to de-ice concrete in winter?
We recommend using fine sand and/or gravel to de-ice your concrete products in winter. Patio Drummond prohibits the use of de-icing salt to prevent the surface of concrete slabs, pavers, balconies, and steps from chipping or crumbling. Patio Drummond accepts no responsibility for damage caused by the use of de-icing salt on its products. De-icing salts are often sold without warnings about their harmful effects on concrete slabs, pavers, and balconies. Even when packaging states "safe for concrete," you must pay close attention to the warnings and application instructions, as these are often unrealistic. The APCHQ (Quebec Provincial Association of Home Builders) strongly recommends using sand or fine gravel instead. Given manufacturers' restrictions on the use of de-icing salts, it's much simpler to avoid sprinkling them on your concrete balconies to prevent their surface from chipping or crumbling. While sand and gravel do require more maintenance, these two products are undoubtedly a guarantee of longevity for the concrete of your slabs, pavers, and balconies.
How can I protect my tiles from stains?
How can I protect my tiles from stains?
Our Drycast products are now made with Hydrapel, which protects them and makes them more resistant to deterioration. We may recommend applying a sealant if your slabs are located under trees and/or if the surface is used to create an outdoor cooking, dining, etc., area. Please note that there are several types and colors of sealant available, and a sealant may change the appearance of your slab (either in color or sheen). Please consult the sealant manufacturers and carefully read the instructions for use. Patio Drummond accepts no liability for damages resulting from the use of sealant on its products.
How long should I wait before cleaning and sealing my slabs and/or paving stones?
How long should I wait before cleaning and sealing my slabs and/or paving stones?
Before cleaning and sealing a new concrete product, we recommend waiting at least one (1) year to allow time for efflorescence to rise to the surface.
Can a damaged slab or paving stone be replaced?
Can a damaged slab or paving stone be replaced?
Yes, provided you kept a few extra units during the initial installation (which is why we recommend buying about 10% more than the quantity needed for your project). To replace the slab or paver, scrape off the polymeric sand and, using two flathead screwdrivers, remove the old product and replace it with the new one. Fill the joint with polymeric sand and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

How to prevent grass from growing between slabs or paving stones?
How to prevent grass from growing between slabs or paving stones?
We recommend using polymeric sand in the joints of your products to minimize grass and weed growth. There's little you can do in damp, shady areas to prevent grass from growing. If you want a permanent solution, consult a professional.
How can I ensure the sustainability of my home?
How can I ensure the sustainability of my home?
To ensure the longevity of your fire blocks, we recommend (1) adding sand to the bottom of the fire pit up to the bowl (except for the BBQ fire pit), (2) only using it for ambient fires, (3) never watering your blocks to avoid thermal shock, and (4) never using them in winter, for the same reason as recommendation 3. You can even cover your fire pit during the winter to preserve its new and cozy appearance. Our fire pits are designed for ambient fires. It's a bad idea to use them for a bonfire, and we believe an ambient fire is just as enjoyable! 😉
