CarbiCrete's carbon-negative concrete manufacturing process avoids emissions while removing carbon from the atmosphere.
Montreal, December 14, 2023
CarbiCrete and landscaping manufacturer Patio Drummond announced today that they are doubling production of cement-free, carbon-negative concrete blocks manufactured at Patio Drummond's plant in Drummondville, Quebec. CarbiCrete's carbon-negative concrete block production process replaces cement with steel slag, a byproduct of steelmaking, and hardens it with carbon dioxide, thus avoiding the greenhouse gas emissions associated with cement production while permanently sequestering the CO2 in the resulting concrete products. Every 2,000 CarbiCrete blocks produced permanently sequesters one tonne of carbon from the atmosphere and prevents the emission of more than three tonnes of emissions.
“This is a very exciting step in the evolution of our relationship with Patio Drummond,” says Chris Stern, CEO of CarbiCrete. “They have been steadfast partners since the launch of our pilot project in 2018, right up to being the first manufacturer to commercialize our technology.” “Increasing production of our negative carbon blocks brings us closer to our shared goal of decarbonizing the production of the world’s most consumed man-made substance.” “We are proud to increase our production capacity of negative carbon concrete blocks,” explains Philippe Girardin, co-owner of Patio Drummond. “The more we produce, the greater the positive impact on our planet. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.”
Beyond creating sustainable building products, implementing CarbiCrete technology generates carbon credits available to companies seeking to offset their emissions and achieve their carbon reduction targets. Last week, CarbiCrete announced it had reached an agreement with Lafarge Canada for the processing of steel slag, its alternative binder for concrete.
About CarbiCrete: CarbiCrete is a Montreal-based company specializing in carbon removal. Its patented technology enables the production of cement-free, carbon-free concrete from industrial by-products and captured carbon dioxide. For every tonne of concrete produced using the CarbiCrete process, 150 kg of CO2 are reduced or removed.
