Interview
Will freezing and thawing damage concrete products?
Will freezing and thawing damage concrete products?
No. Frost damage is practically nonexistent! The space between the concrete pieces (paving stones, slabs, or retaining walls) allows them to move without cracking or splitting. The quality of the concrete we use also ensures increased frost resistance for each product. New for 2022: Our drycast products have seen their biggest improvement yet with Hydrapel. Factory-engineered for enhanced quality and precision, the products are made with an additive that makes them permeable and therefore more durable. Added directly to the mix of our drycast products, Hydrapel reduces the absorption rate and increases resistance to freezing and thawing, as well as weathering. Hydrapel protects against stains and enhances UV resistance for a vibrant, long-lasting color!
How to de-ice concrete in winter?
How to de-ice concrete in winter?
We recommend using fine sand and/or gravel to de-ice your concrete products in winter. Patio Drummond prohibits the use of de-icing salt to prevent the surface of concrete slabs, pavers, balconies, and steps from chipping or crumbling. Patio Drummond accepts no responsibility for damage caused by the use of de-icing salt on its products. De-icing salts are often sold without warnings about their harmful effects on concrete slabs, pavers, and balconies. Even when packaging states "safe for concrete," you must pay close attention to the warnings and application instructions, as these are often unrealistic. The APCHQ (Quebec Provincial Association of Home Builders) strongly recommends using sand or fine gravel instead. Given manufacturers' restrictions on the use of de-icing salts, it's much simpler to avoid sprinkling them on your concrete balconies to prevent their surface from chipping or crumbling. While sand and gravel do require more maintenance, these two products are undoubtedly a guarantee of longevity for the concrete of your slabs, pavers, and balconies.
How can I protect my tiles from stains?
How can I protect my tiles from stains?
Our Drycast products are now made with Hydrapel, which protects them and makes them more resistant to deterioration. We may recommend applying a sealant if your slabs are located under trees and/or if the surface is used to create an outdoor cooking, dining, etc., area. Please note that there are several types and colors of sealant available, and a sealant may change the appearance of your slab (either in color or sheen). Please consult the sealant manufacturers and carefully read the instructions for use. Patio Drummond accepts no liability for damages resulting from the use of sealant on its products.
How long should I wait before cleaning and sealing my slabs and/or paving stones?
How long should I wait before cleaning and sealing my slabs and/or paving stones?
Before cleaning and sealing a new concrete product, we recommend waiting at least one (1) year to allow time for efflorescence to rise to the surface.
Can a damaged slab or paving stone be replaced?
Can a damaged slab or paving stone be replaced?
Yes, provided you kept a few extra units during the initial installation (which is why we recommend buying about 10% more than the quantity needed for your project). To replace the slab or paver, scrape off the polymeric sand and, using two flathead screwdrivers, remove the old product and replace it with the new one. Fill the joint with polymeric sand and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

How to prevent grass from growing between slabs or paving stones?
We recommend using polymeric sand in the joints of your products to minimize grass and weed growth. There's little you can do in damp, shady areas to prevent grass from growing. If you want a permanent solution, consult a professional.
How can I ensure the sustainability of my home?
How can I ensure the sustainability of my home?
To ensure the longevity of your fire blocks, we recommend (1) adding sand to the bottom of the fire pit up to the bowl (except for the BBQ fire pit), (2) only using it for ambient fires, (3) never watering your blocks to avoid thermal shock, and (4) never using them in winter, for the same reason as recommendation 3. You can even cover your fire pit during the winter to preserve its new and cozy appearance. Our fire pits are designed for ambient fires. It's a bad idea to use them for a bonfire, and we believe an ambient fire is just as enjoyable! 😉

White spots have appeared on my tiles, what should I do?
White spots have appeared on my tiles, what should I do?
What you see on your slabs is called efflorescence. 👀 Efflorescence is a whitish deposit that appears from time to time on the surface of concrete products. Sometimes, cement salts and aggregates embedded in the product are drawn out by absorbed water and transported to the surface where the water evaporates and the salts settle. 🧂 The appearance of these deposits is normal and common with concrete and other cement-based masonry products. Efflorescence usually stops developing within 3 to 24 months of the product's manufacture. Note that the salt will disappear over time. ⏳ Concrete undergoes a natural process that is not harmful to Patio Drummond products. This process is not a manufacturing defect. Patio Drummond offers to clean efflorescence stains one (1) year after the concrete product is installed. Efflorescence can be cleaned with an efflorescence cleaner sold at building supply stores. Be sure to carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions. 💯 Patio Drummond accepts no responsibility for this natural phenomenon inherent to concrete products or for its cleaning.

No! We do not recommend using a vibrating plate compactor on your slabs. Do not use any vibrating plate compactor on the slabs.
What is the purpose of the geotextile membrane?
What is the purpose of the geotextile membrane?
The geotextile membrane separates two materials of different natures to prevent them from mixing and causing damage to your project (such as soil and crushed stone). Thanks to its mechanical properties, the geotextile resists stress and limits deformation of structures, thus stabilizing and/or increasing the load-bearing capacity of the soil.

What are the advantages of using concrete products?
What are the advantages of using concrete products?
Concrete products offer a great deal of flexibility in a landscaping project. They are ready to be installed as soon as you take possession and are designed to withstand the freeze-thaw cycles typical of Canada's harsh climate. Patio Drummond offers a wide range of products in four distinct categories:
- Landscaping
- Street furniture
- Precast concrete
- Agricultural
What is the difference between a black painted steel spark arrestor and a stainless steel spark arrestor?
What is the difference between a black painted steel spark arrestor and a stainless steel spark arrestor?
Besides the price, the main difference is that a stainless steel spark arrestor won't rust. Black painted steel, over time, may require more maintenance! That's why we recommend, whenever possible, storing your spark arrestor indoors or covering it with a tarp for the winter!
The spark arresters don't have handles, is that normal?
The spark arresters don't have handles, is that normal?
This is perfectly normal. Although some find it inconvenient, we believe it's safer this way. If there were handles on the spark screen, many would be tempted to use them to open it and add wood to the fireplace. We therefore recommend using a commercially available poker to open both sides of the spark screen. Simply insert the end of the poker into one of the holes in the spark screen to open it – but do so with caution!
Can I use blocks other than the ones you sell for fireplaces?
Can I use blocks other than the ones you sell for fireplaces?
We do not recommend using any products other than Moderno, Urbania, BBQ, and Rustico blocks to build fire pits. This is because our accessories, such as the spark arrestor, are designed for safe fire pit use and are not compatible with our other concrete products. In the event of direct contact with a flame, other landscaping products could suffer thermal shock and crack, which is why we do not recommend them for fire pit construction.
What are the differences between a decorative wall and a retaining wall?
What are the differences between a decorative wall and a retaining wall?
Decorative walls are purely aesthetic. While they serve a purpose and are functional, they remain primarily ornamental in your landscaping. A retaining wall, as its name suggests, must support and contain the earth in front of which it is built. It must therefore be able to withstand the weight and pressure of the earth, especially during severe weather. This type of structure requires a proper foundation and excellent drainage to prevent cracking and subsidence under water pressure. Installing a geotextile membrane and a perforated drain, using suitable crushed stone, and ensuring proper compaction are all elements that will guarantee the longevity of your project.
What is the maximum height I can build my decorative wall and/or retaining wall?
What is the maximum height I can build my decorative wall and/or retaining wall?
The maximum height is determined by the product. Please carefully consult the product page of the retaining wall you are interested in! The height of a retaining wall varies according to several criteria: the type of material used, the type of soil, the wall's slope, any additional loads above the wall, and several other factors. Depending on your project, you may need to consult with an engineer to ensure your project is compliant and safe.
Should I seek the help of an engineer for the design of a retaining wall?
Should I seek the help of an engineer for the design of a retaining wall?
Yes! Especially if the wall needs to be more than 1.2 meters (4 feet) high. A professional engineer can advise you on the requirements to help you develop the design of your retaining wall and ensure your project complies with regulations.

Residential driveway entrance: which products to use?
Residential driveway entrance: which products to use?
For surfaces subject to traffic other than pedestrian (such as vehicles), we recommend using paving stones with a minimum thickness of 60 mm. While slabs and paving stones share the same base (concrete), slabs are often thinner and therefore less resistant to heavy loads. In other words, slabs are primarily used for patios, terraces, and gardens. Paving stones, on the other hand, can be used for driveways, spa surrounds, or other high-traffic areas. We invite you to consult our product sheets:
Important: Paving stones can be used to create a patio without any problems. However, slabs cannot be used to create a residential driveway!
